Rooibos, Afrikaans word for ‘red bush’ is not a tea, but a bush found in South Africa. It has a nutty, sweet taste, is low in tannins and is caffeine free, making it a desirable tea for children and pregnant or nursing women.
Red Rooibos are leaves that have been oxidized for several hours before being left to dry. Green Rooibos is not oxidized and is slightly stronger tasting.
Rooibos is known to be high in antioxidants, and contains trace vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, calcium, manganese, iron, zinc, copper and magnesium. It is a great overall ‘wellbeing’ tea which has also been studied to be beneficial for insomnia and digestion.
Rooibos teas can be flavoured with fruits, herbs, flowers and spices, and be enjoyed either hot or iced.
